Are you looking forward to trying it out? Let’s get right into this post.

What are Micro Twists?

Micro twists are a protective, versatile look achieved with two small strands. They are similar, in fact, and are installed the same way as regular twists. The only difference is that the strands for each twist are smaller, resulting in a fluffier appearance.

What are Micro Twists

Micro twists can be installed on natural hair or with hair extensions. They are a low-maintenance style that can last up to 6-8 weeks if properly cared for. However, we wouldn’t suggest wearing them for too long, as it can damage your hair.

These twists offer a lightweight style that helps protect your hair. So, not only are they praised for their versatility and style, but they are also loved for their little to no weight and the minimal tension they place on the scalp.

Benefits of Micro Twists

Micro twists are visually appealing. We’ve mentioned how versatile they can be. You can create updos, buns, ponytails, and many more looks with them. Plus, you can go for long, short, or super short styles.

Benefits of Micro Twists

But that’s just one of the pros of micro twists. There are many more benefits of the style. Let’s see that in this section.

1. They Promote Hair Growth

Micro twists keep the ends of your hair tucked away and protect it from external factors, making the hair flourish. They reduce the damage caused by regular manipulation, such as combing daily, allowing your hair to grow.

2. They Reduce Breakage

Our hair tends to break a lot if it is let loose and not in a protective style. But twists prevent that from happening. They act as a shield against damage, keeping it hydrated and helping it retain its length.

3. They are Durable and Lightweight

These twists are generally not heavy. They are a super lightweight, low-tension style you can wear for long without feeling disturbed. Moreover, they are durable and can last for two months, even up to 16 weeks.

Micro twists maintain their shape for a long period despite the fact that they do not require high maintenance.

4. They are Wash Day Friendly

If you’ve always wanted a style that makes it easy to access your scalp and apply products or wash, then micro twists are for you. You can clean your twists, dry them, and take care of your scalp without facing any difficulty.

5. They are Low-maintenance

Micro twists are easy to manage. They reduce the amount of time you need to style your hair drastically, requiring minimal effort. Just moisturizing every 2 to 3 days and protecting it at night is enough to maintain your style.

6. They Help Retain Moisture

Your hair will retain moisture better when you wear a protective style like micro twists. Because your hair is twisted, the moisture remains locked within your strands for a long time. However, make sure to install the style after washing and moisturizing your hair.

Are There Any Downsides to Micro Twists?

Are There Any Downsides to Micro Twists

Yes, there are a few downsides to micro twists. Some of them include:

1. Long Installation Period

Micro twists take a longer period to install than regular twists. They may require more than 12 hours to install, depending on your hair length and volume. Using this amount of time to install is quite tedious.

2. Tangling

Wearing your style for too long might cause tangling and matting, especially for those with 4 hair types. This is why we advise not to wear your style for more than four months.

3. The Take Down is Time Consuming

The takedown process of micro twists is just as hectic as the braiding process, especially because you have to be careful not to break your natural hair.

How to Install Micro Twists?

Follow the steps below to style your micro twists.

Step 1: Wash Your Natural Hair

Wash Your Natural Hair

Prepping your hair before micro-twisting can’t be overemphasized. It is important to remove oil, dirt, and product buildup and have a clean scalp and hair before micro-twisting. This prevents tangling and matting. Plus, you are allowing your hair to retain moisture better after you twist.

A good way to start is by shampooing your hair. Use a sulfate-free shampoo to do this, rinse off, then condition afterwards. A hydrating conditioner won’t strip your hair of its oils, as it moisturizes. Lastly, for the washing stage, allow your hair to air-dry.

Step 2: Moisturize and Section Your Hair

Moisturize and Section Your Hair

As we’ve said several times, micro twists can help your hair retain moisture. For that to happen, you need to moisturize before twisting. So, get your favorite hair oil or leave-in conditioner and apply it to your hair. Cover every part of your hair before going ahead to section it.

Divide your hair by splitting it into different parts to make the braiding process easy. Once you’ve divided your hair, hold each section with a clip.

Step 3: Go for Sub Sections and Twist

@jazzlindanielle i did my first set of microtwist locs on someone else! 😍😍 tutorial on how i install. total time: 7hrs I’ll post the results in a separate tiktok 🤩 #diymicrolocs #microtwists #locjourney #microtwistlocs #diylocs #hairlove #microlocs ♬ Chill Vibes - Tollan Kim

Now, pick one of the big four sections (start from the back), and divide it further into smaller parts. There’s no exact size for this. Just try to keep the subsections consistent so your twists can come out even.

Take one part and twist from the root till the tip. You can start by using the three-strand method for half an inch to prevent your twists from unraveling. Continue with the two-strand method till you reach the ends. However, if you want to start with the two-strand method, you can twist and pull. That way, it doesn’t lose.

Step 4: Repeat

When you finish that section, move on to the next and proceed with step 4. Keep repeating the step for other sections till you’re done with all your head. Remember that this can take a while to complete. So, if you’re tired, take breaks in between.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Once you’re done twisting, apply mousse to define the ends and reduce frizz. Then, style anyhow you wish!

How to Care for Your Micro Twists?

In the days that follow, treat your micro twists with care. Be gentle and avoid pulling them. You may not need to apply any product yet, but be sure to protect your hair at night. Here are some more general maintenance tips to help manage your micro twists:

1. Wash your scalp after two to three weeks. Be sure to use a good shampoo and conditioner whenever you wash.

2. Hydrate with a leave-in conditioner a few times a week to moisturize your hair. It can be a water-based spray product or oil.

3. Always wear a satin or silk bonnet to sleep. This prevents dryness, friction, and frizz.

4. Be sure not go overstyle your hair, especially after the first few days.

5. If there are twists that need your attention, redo them to enjoy a fresh style.

What to Avoid

Your hair can become matted and damaged if you make certain mistakes. Here are some things to avoid:

- ❌Neglecting your hair for weeks: This can cause your hair to break and become dry. Although micro twists are a low-maintenance style, it is important to moisturize and care for them regularly.

- ❌Not protecting them at night: Your hair may frizz, dry out, and break if you leave it exposed at night. This happens when your hair rubs against the traditional cotton bedsheets we use.

Note: These sheets affect the hair by absorbing moisture and causing friction.

- ❌Wearing the style for too long: Do not keep your style in for too long before taking it down. Keeping it for more than 3 to 4 months can cause your roots to mat.

- ❌Manipulating them frequently: As much as you might love to try out different styles with your micro twists, frequent styling can lead to frizz. So, avoid overmanipulating your hair.
